The U.S.
soldier Robert Bales was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the
possibility of parole for the massacre of 16 Afghan civilians in years past,
one of the worst atrocities of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A military
judge announced the ruling after hours of closing arguments, with prosecutors
saying the words themselves Bales proved that he knew what he was doing when he
launched the attack before dawn in March 2012.
Bales, 40,
pleaded guilty in June in a deal to avoid the death penalty. He testified on
Thursday and perdiu apologize for the massacre, describing it as an act of
cowardice.

Bales,
father of two, fulfilled his room combat service when he left his post at Camp
Belambay, in Kandahar province, in the middle of the night to attack two
villages.
Arguing that
Bales should not get parole, prosecutor Jay Morse showed jurors pictures of a
girl who was killed while shouting and crying. He showed videos of security
cameras that appears Bales returning to his base with "methodical
confidence of a man who fulfilled his mission."

Defense
attorney Emma Scanlan said that no one can mitigate the atrocities committed
Bales, but urged jurors to consider his prior military service and leave it as
a "chance of light" - a perpetual with the possibility of parole
after 20 years .

survivors and relatives of victims traveled to the U.S. to testify this week,
and cursed Bales for attacking the villagers while they slept and begged for
mercy.
